About Tessa
Tessa holds a Level 3 senior Iyengar Yoga teaching certificate and runs an established yoga school in Wellington, New Zealand. She has been practising Iyengar yoga for 35 years and teaching since 1998.
She has studied with the Iyengars in Pune and at conventions in New Zealand and Australia. She has also completed Stephanie Quirk’s seven-part yoga therapy course, which shapes her continuing interest in the therapeutic application of yoga. For 27 years she has studied with her teacher, Peter Thomson, and is immensely grateful for his teaching, guidance and support.
Tessa is an intuitive, kind and observant teacher. Her teaching centres on developing mindfulness, or awareness, through practice. She also practises Vipassana meditation, which informs her teaching. Asana helps to develop direct perception while building functional strength, mobility and stability. Pranayama and meditation further sharpen awareness, bringing lightness and clarity. The result is a practice that engages students mentally, emotionally and physically, and one that supports them through the whole of life.
She has been leading retreats for over fifteen years and values the way they allow for a complete reset, and for the true depth and benefit of daily practice to be experienced. Her retreats bring together asana, pranayama, sitting and walking meditation, plant-based meals and a warm and welcoming group. Days settle into a quiet rhythm of practice, rest, reflection and time in nature. Students of all levels with some previous Iyengar yoga experience are welcome to join her at Byron Bay in November.
